About Hazel
I’m an artist, illustrator, writer and passionate picker-up of interesting stuff: textures, stories, patterns, faces.
I live and work in the wild, hilly countryside in the south of Scotland.
Everyone who knows me gets used to me testing out a dozen new creative ideas before coffee time! Manoeuvring around diverse projects in progress is part and parcel of a studio visit, and my family are pretty patient about the piles of sketchbooks in the kitchen.
My Work
I often get stuck. Or my crazier ideas bring a load of challenge. When creative freeze strikes I’m always grateful for my grounding in how to use a very wide range of traditional artists’ materials and processes. And always to keep returning to drawing from life.
I did a rigorous training in drawing and painting at Leith School of Art. Before that I studied life drawing and printmaking part-time at Edinburgh College of Art.
A few years ago I retrained in illustration. I learnt how to create and illustrate picture books for children.
